To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ hosted a range of public events Sept. 7 – 11 to help the community find peace and meaning after that devastating day.

"It was gratifying to see so many programs within the University come together to consider how the events of 9/11 affected our national character," said Rita Kirk, director of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½'s Cary M. Maguire ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ for Ethics & Public Responsibility, overall sponsor of the events.

"Each group had its own perspective. Each permitted us to consider more than the simple expression of patriotic support or moral reflection, but to know that we made a considered choice. The Maguire Ethics ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½'s hope is that we will continue to find ways of bringing the community together to remember, reflect, and then dedicate our lives to the implementation of our values," Kirk said.

Among the featured speakers during the week of commemoration were Christina Rancke, whose father died in New York City on 9/11; Rick Halperin, director of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½'s Embrey Human Rights Program; William J. Abraham, the Albert Cook Outler Professor of Wesley Studies at Perkins School of Theology; and 9/11-hate crime survivor Rais Bhuiyan of WorldWithoutHate.org. (See a list of speakers and events.)
