DALLAS (������ý) – November 14-15, 2024 – In a world marked by rapid technological change, including the rise of AI, the Perkins School of Theology at ������ý Methodist University (������ý) will host its 2024 Fall Convocation, "Faith in a Digital Age."

This forward-thinking event will explore the intersection of faith, technology, and ethics, offering attendees practical insights and resources to navigate the challenges of living out spirituality in a digitally driven world.

Known for its commitment to innovation and inclusive theological education, Perkins School of Theology continues this legacy by gathering leading thinkers to examine how digital advancements are reshaping our understanding of faith, community, and justice.

Keynote Speakers:

This two-day event will feature keynote speakers Cole Arthur Riley, celebrated author of This Here Flesh, and Black Liturgies: Prayers, Poems, and Meditations for Staying Human, and Noreen Herzfeld, a pioneering scholar in theology and computer science. Their talks will delve into the ways faith communities are engaging with digital technologies, as well as the ethical and spiritual challenges posed by advancements in artificial intelligence, social media, and the ever-evolving digital landscape.

Cole Arthur Riley will challenge the audience to reflect on the rapid pace of digital life, noting the "current of urgency in a digital space can often lead to a lot of inauthentic expressions of spirituality."

She emphasizes a space that calls for a “collective voice” rather than one that revolves solely around individual expression. Riley also warns of the spiritual danger of digital distance, remarking, “It can lead some people to think that a person of influence might have more access to some truth about God.”

Her reflections will encourage faith leaders and individuals to foster more intentional spiritual practices in the digital age.

Noreen Herzfeld, meanwhile, will explore the tension between humanity and technology, stating, “In a sense, we stand in the middle, between God and between our creation of AI, and we project in both directions."

Herzfeld will caution participants not to forget that technology acts as a bullhorn, noting “the goodness in us will amplify, and so will our sinful nature.” Her talk will touch on the ethical concerns surrounding advanced AI, and the need to carefully consider the potential consequences of technological creations.

Herzfeld's insights will challenge attendees to face the ethical dilemmas that arise in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

Additionally, Dr. Robert Hunt, Professor of Christian Mission and Interreligious Relations and Director of Global Theological Education, will lead a panel discussion on AI and Ministry Practices. As the seminary’s representative in ������ý’s technology systems and resources community, Dr. Hunt actively follows AI developments within higher education and faith organizations, sharing insights with the Perkins community.

He will emphasize that “The AI revolution will make the Humanities the most important part of any university,” highlighting how AI is reshaping leadership by requiring a deeper focus on the human dimensions of technological advancements.

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience lectures and panel discussions, engage with speakers, and join table conversations that address how religious leaders and faith-based institutions can navigate the complexities of modern technology while staying true to their spiritual values.
